5 Best MTB Bike Pants

No matter the conditions, having quality pants can make an enormous difference when riding. The NF DP4 delivers optimal protection and breathability while remaining flexible enough to offer flattering fitting on long rides.

These pants offer similar levels of comfort and performance as the Rapha Trail Lightweight pants; however, they may provide slightly warmer temperatures.

 5 Best MTB Bike Pants

1. Rapha Trail Lightweight Pants

Rapha may be relatively new to mountain bike clothing, but they have quickly established themselves with their impressive line of high-performing kit. Their women's Trail Lightweight pants showcase this commitment to detail and quality; offering practical insulation alongside impressive waterproof protection.

These tights are constructed of lightweight nylon fabric with an impressive 12% elastane content and four-way stretch. This allows them to provide excellent freedom of movement even with bulky knee pads attached. Their gusset and back panels also have tough patches designed to prevent crank rub or drivetrain snag, while there's an internal waistband drawstring, adjustable belt loops and large press tab on the rear to keep these tights securely fastened.

These Gore-Tex trousers, unlike others in our test, do not offer mechanical ventilation; however, Claire found the fabric to be sufficiently breathable for most three-season rides. One minor downside might be soggy cuffs like those seen on Rapha Core Rain Jacket II and Altura Glidepath Pants; otherwise these would be excellent options to consider!

2. Pearl Izumi Elevate Pants

Elevate pants were an unexpected delight with their lightweight feel and thoughtful features, like knee pads that remained securely in place throughout long climbs to reduce pressure on our legs and reduce stress on long journeys.

The fabric combines recycled nylon and spandex for a soft, comfortable ride that moves with your body. Breathing well makes this option suitable for rides in temperatures ranging between 40-60 degrees Fahrenheit; additionally it's watertight with zippered side pockets ideal for keeping snacks or phones handy.

Other thoughtful details include articulated knees and ratchet closure with multiple adjustment options. A wide waistband adds comfort while stretchy fabric maintains its elasticity and flattering fit even after several days of wear. Though they may be pricey, their quality materials and designs make these mountain bike pants worth every penny - plus, they come with a one-year warranty, which is pretty standard among bike apparel products.

3. Troy Lee Designs Skyline Pants

David: The Troy Lee Designs Skyline Pants are great mountain biking pants designed to keep riders comfortable when temperatures and conditions vary greatly. Constructed of lightweight fabric that breathes well and featuring perforations in high heat zones such as knee backs or the crotch area. I have worn mine in temperatures reaching 65 degrees without issue - they kept my backside cool and dry!

The zippered hip pockets offer plenty of room for phones, secured with high-quality YKK zippers and featuring DWR (durable water repellent) coating for splashes or light rain. Their slim fit is suitable for most mountain bikers while their waist adjustment uses an easy and secure ratchet buckle buckle system allowing quick adjustment while riding.

These pants may not be as durable as Rapha Trail Lightweight or Pearl Izumi Elevate pants, but they still perform admirably during crashes and hiking around on trails. For something a bit more rugged check out POC Resistance Pro DH Pants; their thick fabric and extra abrasion-resistant panels give them superior breathability, durability, and comfort compared with more budget options.

4. Specialized Gravity Pants

As their name implies, these pants are designed for rugged downhilling and bike parks. Their fabric is soft yet breathable while the waist adjustment works seamlessly. A DWR coating helps ward off light rain showers or puddle splashes.

Pre-shaped and articulated knees work great when cycling, reducing binding while moving as you pedal. Equipped with zipped leg vents, Velcro ankle cuffs and an abundance of size adjustments for changing temperatures on the trail, these pants offer plenty of versatility to adapt to changing temperatures on your ride.

An essential feature of mountain bike pants is their thickness and durability. While ultra breathable models such as the Rapha Trail Lightweight may be great for warmer rides, they do not provide sufficient overall durability for rough terrain or park laps. Pearl Izumi Elevate Pants provide thicker options suitable for these conditions - as well as providing extra Cordura reinforcement in high wear areas to increase durability even further. Many brands even provide warranties for their mountain bike pants to increase value over time.

5. POC Resistance Pro DH Pants

If you're in search of downhill mountain bike pants, these are among the finest available. Crafted from Specialized's VaporRize fabric, they have an ultralight feel while remaining highly breathable on the trail, featuring laser perforations to enhance airflow even when sweaty. Although a slimmer fit than some alternatives, these still make long rides comfortable enough; with elasticated ankle cuffs to prevent riding up and elasticized ankle cuffs for quick on/off access; plus enough room to accommodate relatively robust knee pads!

These pants may be on the pricey side, but are worth every penny if you regularly ride downhill and want top-of-the-line cycling attire. Not only are they waterproof yet supple; their design offers smart bike features like zippered pockets and DWR coating to repel light rain. Their easily adjustable waist ratchet ensures that a good fit without becoming restrictive; plus their tapered ankle design helps avoid getting caught on trail side vegetation or bike parts.
